What should your wedding cake be like?

The traditional three-tiered all white wedding cake sounds absolute divine. While it's a classic though, there are many bakeries that cater to more personalized choices now. Less and less cookie cutter weddings are happening -- that's a good thing. Here are some wedding cake ideas in case you want to forego the classic white one:
Bake the cake yourself. What the heck? Hey, it's just an idea. If you're a super baker, you can go ahead and do this! Bake the cake with your fiance for a more personal touch. You'll compromise on time though, as you could be using the baking time to just relaaax, but hey, don't shoot down this idea. Especially if you're a baking aficionado. And a perfectionist.
Cupcakes galore! Instead of one huge cake to be divided among your guests, order some cupcakes instead. Individual bliss.
Prepare a cake that has a special recipe. During my friend's wedding, her groom's Dad (therefore her father-in-law) baked a cake for each table during the reception. The recipe was his late wife's. That made the moment super sentimental and special. It was a touching way to involve her. The cake rocked too.
Choose a cake that fits your theme. Having a beach wedding? How about some pineapple upside down cake? Or dress up that traditional triple-tier cake with candy starfish and shells. Or serve an ambrosia cake - lovely angel cake coated with coconut shavings. Yum!
Reflect the season. Winter: All-white would be perfect, especially with glistening toppings that resemble crystals and icicles. Spring: Decorate with bright flowers, flowing ribbons and butterflies. Summer: Seashells, sunshine (yellow icing?) and a casual feel. Somehow a frozen peach cheesecake sounds perfect to me. Fall: A chocolate cake with red and orange trimming sounds perfect.
These are some ideas to jumpstart your cake hunt. Now while how it looks matters, don't forget that it has to taste absolutely spectacular too!
