Do you need to put up a wedding website? Maybe yes, maybe no. But here are some reasons why a personal wedding site can help you:
Your wedding website could be the central point for your family and friends to get information about your wedding. Some things you can share that will help both you and your guests are:wedding ceremony details, maps to the venues, nearby hotels, where you're registered. Perfect for guests who are out of town.
Your family and friends can get to know you and your partner better. Share your proposal story. Do a little profile for each of yourselves. Write down your favorite foods, music, movies, etc. Post pictures of your early days as a couple or your engagement photos. Share stories about what you love most about each other, how you know s/he was the ONE.
Guests who don't make it could celebrate with you via the website. Why not document your ceremony on webcam for those who can't make it? You can include this option so no loved one gets left out on the big day. You can also post pictures and stories of your wedding day here.
It could feature the VIPs of your wedding day. While you two are the most important people on your big day, why not post pictures and short write-ups of your entourage? Share how you're related to your maid-of-honor or best man. Tell them why you chose Spot the Shih Tzu to be your ring bearer. This gives your wedding a more personal feel as guests get to know the entourage better too.
Blog your wedding preps. Document your wedding planning. Guests can come along for the ride and may even give you helpful advice.
If you're interested in preparing a wedding site, there are a lot of links online. Just type "personal wedding websites" in your search engine and find the hosting plan that suits you best. If you have a friend who's great in web design, maybe s/he can help you put it together.
And then what happens after the wedding is done? Why not turn it into a website still for your partner and yourself? It would still be a good way for loved ones to stay in touch with you.
Good luck!
